Blockchain – A Regulatory Unicorn?

January 2, 2016

Never one to let a bandwagon pass by, Greg Medcraft, the Chairman of the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), has enthusiastically hopped onto the Blockchain wagon. Mr Medcraft has seen the light and recently proclaimed “Blockchain is an important technology development that has the potential to change fundamentally the world’s capital markets.”

This is a hugely extravagant claim for what is a basic, if very elegant, piece of computer code.

And Mr Medcraft is not alone. None other than Arthur Levitt, the esteemed ex-Chairman of the Securities

and Exchange Commission (SEC), has also been converted. And banks, such as Commbank, have eagerly embraced this “next big thing”.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Levitt    Arthur Levitt Jr. (born February 3, 1931) was the twenty-fifth and longest-serving Chairman of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) from 1993 to 2001. Widely hailed as a champion of the individual investor, he has been criticized for not pushing for

tougher accounting rules. Since May 2001 he has been employed as a senior adviser at the Carlyle Group.

[1] Levitt previously served as a policy advisor to Goldman Sachs[2] and is a Director of Bloomberg LP,

parent of Bloomberg News.[3]
