National Australia Bank has been flooded with customer complaints after its internet and phone banking crashed two days before Christmas.

Customers began reporting problems on Thursday morning, saying they could not access internet banking. NAB told customers that ATMs and EFTPOS were still operating and it was "working to fix this asap".

The system was offline for almost 90 minutes. Customers were not impressed, criticising the bank on social media and threatening to cancel their accounts.

The bank's Facebook and Twitter accounts were deluged with complaints from customers whose plans to pay staff, do Christmas shopping or go on holidays were affected.

"This is quite possibly the worst time to have problems," one posted on NAB's Facebook page.

"This is pathetic we are about to go on holidays and internet banking not working SO FRUSTRATING," another wrote.

"2nd time in 4 weeks. This at Xmas time, will consider changing banks in early 2017. Absolute joke," said another.

Trying to do my xmas shopping but can't access I/banking. Thank @NAB #not really . Can only imagine your IT team is hating life today.  — Sarah (@sar__cssm) December 21, 2016

NAB apologised for the outage and the inconvenience caused.

"NAB will continue to monitor services and is working hard to stabilise our systems," a spokesperson said.  “We’re sorry for the trouble this morning. Our services are starting to come back online. We’ll continue to monitor and stabilise our systems”
