Deputy Labor Leader and Opposition Planning spokesman Michael Daley proposed the idea on Tuesday at the Boomtown Summit, run by the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue,.
“I think with the geographical constraints we’ve got and the increase of supply, it’s going to be increasingly difficult in order for people to achieve the aspiration of owning a house (in Sydney)," he said.
“So eventually we’ll get to, if we’re not there already, if you want to own a house you have to (look) further west and eventually when the west becomes constrained, out of Sydney, out of Gosford, drive through the tunnel we hope will be built through the Blue Mountains one day, out to Lithgow, Bathurst."
“Eventually supply and demand will mean houses will only be available in Sydney for well cashed up people,” Mr Daley said.
“I don’t want to see a Sydney where our quality of life has been undermined by tall buildings in every nook and cranny," he added.
“Sydney is not Dubai, it’s not Shanghai, we don't want to lose that character, we need to work out what sort of city we want.”
